Japan and the United States have begun discussions on amending the defence cooperation guidelines in Tokyo.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will call to exercise the right of collective self-defence. An expert panel was asked to discuss the revision of the interpretation of the Constitution regarding the country’s right of collective self-defence during Abe’s first Cabinet in 2006 and 2007.
But the report was shelved. Abe plans to resume the discussion this time. Expanding the function of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces will also be under discussion. It’s expected the amending process could take more than a year to complete.
