The US may not leave any troops in Afghanistan after December 2014, according to White House officials.
The Obama administration had considered a number of options for a residual presence after 2014, ranging from keeping as few as 3-thousand troops to as many as 15-thousand. But they have now said for the first time that they could leave none, despite warnings from the Pentagon.
Security officials say thousands of US troops could be needed in Afghanistan to strengthen the Afghan army and police and help keep a lid on al-Qaeda. The US currently has some 66-thousand troops in Afghanistan, down from a peak of 100-thousand in 2010.
