The presidents of Sudan and South Sudan are reported to have reached a deal on the administration of the disputed border area of Abyei. A long-delayed demilitarized zone along the border has also apparently been signed off.
Sudan’s president Omar al-Bashir and South Sudan’s president Salva Kiir met late on Friday in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. The two sides have agreed to speed up the formation of civil institutions in Abyei, while a timetable has now been set for the implementation of a stalled cooperation deal reached in September last year, covering oil supplies and other economic cooperation. The Ethiopian Prime Minister was also at the talks, along with African Union mediator Thabo Mbeki. Mbeki says the two presidents have agreed that action needs to be taken as soon as possible, and without conditions.
