Google's executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, and New Mexico's former governor, Bill Richardson, say they plan to visit the Democratic People's Republic of Korea as early as this month. Google did not directly respond to a question about whether Schmidt was going to the DPRK.
However the spokeswoman suggested any visit would not be for company business. The trip comes at a time when the UN Security Council is deliberating whether to move against the DPRK over its launch of a satellite last month. It was unclear who Schmidt would meet or what his agenda might be.
A US State Department spokeswoman said on Thursday that the time is not right for a trip. But the spokeswoman added that Schmidt and Richardson were private citizens and were allowed to make their own decisions.
