Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" is sweeping the US film market and is set to release in China this month. And Andy Serkis, the man behind the voice of Gollum has a new role as director in the three part prequel.
The British-born actor is the pioneer of motion-capture performance. He rose to fame as the obsessive Gollum in Jackson’s "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and has also played King Kong and Caesar in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes".
New Zealand director Peter Jackson arrives at the US premiere of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected
Journey" December 6, 2012 at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York.
Peter Jackson’s name turns up many times in Serkis’ filmography. Serkis says Jackson is his favourite director and has influenced him a lot. And it was Peter Jackson who asked Serkis to take on a new role in his new movie.
Jackson said, "I really thought of Andy to be the director, one is because I knew how much he wanted to direct and I’d seen stuff he’d directed in the past but he also has a terrific courage. He’s a risk taker, which you can see in his performances, but also as a director he’s not conservative."
And for Andy Serkis, directing was his main job this time, more important than playing Gollum, he thought. It was an incredible experience.
Serkis said, "Pete wanted me to be there really to direct performance knowing that I’d be backed up by a fantastic technical crew, and it was a huge crew - 150 people. We shot everything from the aerials to battle sequences, working with this incredible cast and we shot for 200 days so it was a huge job."
In the future, Serkis will try to direct more movies. Directing George Orwell’s literary classic "Animal Farm" is his next directorial ambition after "The Hobbit".
Director Jackson and cast Armitage, Freeman, Wood and Serkis attend premiere of 'The Hobbit -
An Unexpected Journey' in Tokyo.
