US President Barack Obama has spoken at an inter-faith vigil being held to mourn the victims of the shooting rampage at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
The service at the Newtown High School featured prayers from religious leaders from a number of faiths as well as remarks by political leaders. They mourned the loss of so many young lives and paid tribute to the school staff who also lost their lives.
Twenty children between the age of 6 and 7 were killed in Friday’s shooting. Six adults were also killed at the school before the shooter killed himself. Authorities say the suspect Adam Lanza also killed his mother before he went to the school.
Ahead of the service, President Obama spent some time meeting with the victims’ families. In the service, he paid tribute to what he called the stories of strength, resolve and sacrifice.
Michael Bloomberg, New York city Mayor, said, "The President campaigned back in 2008 on a bill that would prohibit assault weapons. We’ve got to really question whether military-style weapons with big magazines belong on the streets of America in this day and age."
