The town of Newton has come together to hold a candlelight vigil in memory of those who died in the shooting.
A special service has been held at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church. The church was filled to capacity with local residents and people from nearby towns who came to show solidarity. The church’s pastor, Monsignor Robert Weiss spent much of the day with the families affected by the tragedy.
Other prayer services have also been held at Trinity Episcopal Church on Main Street in Newton and Newtown United Methodist Church.
Vigils were also planned in other cities and towns on Friday. Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama ordered the US Capitol flag be lowered to half-mast as a symbol of mourning.
