More than 100 Western and Arab countries have given full political recognition to the opposition Syrian National Coalition. The move came at a meeting in Morocco on Wednesday. This increases the pressure on President Bashar Assad and the possibility of military support to the opposition.
The recognition of the SNC by the so called "the Friends of the Syrian People" reflects a hardening consensus that the 20-month-old uprising might be nearing a tipping point. The meeting’s final statement says Assad has lost all legitimacy. But it stopped short of calling for him to step down.
The statement also announces humanitarian assistance from Saudi Arabia of 100 million US dollars. There's also a reconstruction fund to be managed by Germany and the United Arab Emirates. The coalition was established last month in the Qatari capital Doha.
Laurent Fabius, French Foreign Minister, said,"The national coalition that now represents the whole of the opposition, which we were the first to recognise a month ago, now has 100 countries. One-hundred countries recognise it is the sole voice of the opposition. That is an extraordinary step because it signifies that all the forces of the opposition who were apart before are now aligned."
Ahmed Davutoglu, Turkish Foreign Minister, said,"What we need now is tangible action - not only initiatives or new efforts - but tangible actions to stop this oppression and pains of the Syrian people. There has been several excuses as if Syrian people are not united. Today we have the representative of the Syrian people, the Syrian National Coalition which we all recognise and it is time for the international community to act."
