Residents of Tehran, Iran’s capital, are currently enjoying their second day off from work due to high levels of air pollution. The Governor General of Tehran Province, Morteza Tamaddon, declared earlier that, with the exception of three districts, December 4 and 5 would be non-working days in Tehran.
Authorities in Tehran issued a warning regarding the intensified air pollution in the city, while Tamaddon urged residents not to use their cars. All ministries, offices, institutions, universities, schools have been closed, while banks and medical centres remained open. Pollution, caused mainly by vehicle fumes, accumulates easily in Tehran due to the capital’s position between two mountains.
The CEO of Tehran’s Air Quality Control Center, Yusif Rashidi, said 4,000-5,000 people die annually in Tehran because of heavy air pollution.
