The United States has called on the Palestinians and Israelis to resume peace talks following the UN vote.
The United States had vehemently opposed the Palestinians’ latest move, arguing the elevated status would change nothing on the ground and a Palestinian state can only be achieved through direct talks with Israel. After voting against the resolution, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said, the United States will continue to urge all parties to avoid any further provocative actions in the region, in New York or elsewhere.
She called upon Palestinians and Israelis to resume direct talks, without preconditions, on all the issues that divide them. Direct talks broke down only weeks after U.S. President Barack Obama made them sit down at the negotiating table in early September 2010, as Israel refused to back down over settlement building in the West Bank.
