Standing members from the Presidium, which comprises China’s top leaders, have joined various delegations on the first day of the 18th National Congress of the CPC. In panel discussions with Party delegates on Monday afternoon, they pointed out that CPC General Secretary Hu Jintao’s report is crucial for the Party’s development.
Wu Bangguo joined a discussion with delegates of Anhui province. Wu Bangguo called on Party members to advance the great cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics in an all-around way at the new starting point of history. He said Hu Jintao’s report is the guideline for China to build a moderately prosperous society in all respects. He also underlined the significance of the Scientific Outlook on Development. He said that together with Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory and the important thought of Three Represents, the Scientific Outlook on Development is an important guiding principle the Party must adhere to for a long time.
During a discussion with delegates from Beijing, Jia Qinglin noted that Hu Jintao’s keynote speech set directions for the development of the Party and the country, as well as the efforts of building a well-off society. He said since China’s reforms and opening up, consultative democracy has been widely expanded to the country’s political and social life, and is developing. He added that we must stick to the multi-party cooperation and political consultation system under the leadership of the Communist Party of China.

Li Changchun joined in discussion with the Sichuan Delegation. He noted that Hu Jintao’s report systematically addresses the practical problems on how to develop socialism with Chinese Characteristics. He said that the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics is a historical choice and Chinese people’s choice. It is the only right way for China to build a moderate prosperous society, accelerate socialist modernization and realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Xi Jinping joined a discussion with the Shanghai Delegation. He said that the political report has set tones for China’s development in the coming decade. The report clearly specifies China’s policy, strategy, attitude and final goals. He praised Shanghai’s development in the recent five years, and expressed hope that Shanghai can face challenges and create a new situation for the modern and international city.
In his discussion with the Shandong delegation, Li Keqiang said China is in a critical development period with both opportunities and challenges. We must accelerate the development of socialist market economic system and the changing of economic development ways. He added that we must deepen reforms and adopt a more initiative open-up policy.
He Guoqiang joined delegates from Fujian province, while Zhou Yongkang took part in a discussion with the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous region.
