Manchester United take on Chelsea in a match between two sides fighting it out for top spot in the standings. Chelsea came into this one on top of the table with a four point lead on Man U. But if the Red Devils were going to close that gap, they would have to do something they hadn’t done in 10 years, win at Stamford Bridge.
Things started well for the visitors, as a David Luiz own goal gave United the lead after four minutes, and Robin van Persie fired the visitors 2-0 ahead soon after with his seventh league goal of the season in the 12th minute.
Chelsea roared back to level, thanks to Juan Mata’s free kick inthe 44th minute and a Ramires header in the 53d. It look as if United was on the ropes until Serbian right back Branislav Ivanovic was sent off just past the hour mark for bringing down Ashley Young.
Things got worse for Chelsea five minutes later when Fernando Torres was shown his second yellow card leaving Chelsea down to nine men.
And with that advantage, Man U would find a winner in the 75th as Javier Hernandez - on as a substitute for Tom Cleverley - tapped in Rafael’s fierce cross. Chicharito’s goal sealed the 3-2 victory for United as they finally broke through at Stamford Bridge.
Earlier the Merseyside derby also proved a typically feisty affair as Everton recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Liverpool at Goodison Park. Newcastle United defeated West Bromwich Albion 2-1, and Southampton suffered a 2-1 home loss to Tottenham Hotspur.
In the standings, United’s first win at Chelsea in a decade lifted them back above neighbours Manchester City into second place on goal difference with 21 points, one point behind Chelsea. Everton’s draw with Liverpool sees them fall out of the top four after Tottenham Hotspur’s victory.
