The son of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, is being accused of misusing tax payers’ money as part of a land deal. Lee Si-hyung has been summoned for questioning at the prosecutor’s office on Thursday.
South Korean media says Lee was meant to buy land for his father’s retirement home jointly with the presidential security service, but that he did not pay his share. Instead, the security service paid a higher proportion, and made payments to Lee, costing tax payers over 540,000 US dollars.
The prosecutor’s office is also investigating how the land was purchased under Lee’s name and not his father’s. Opposition lawmakers say the President’s office sold the property to Lee’s son below market value. The project has now been abandoned.
