Controversial Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara has resigned, saying he will establish a new political party.
His announcement comes after months of tensions between Japan and China over the sovereignty of the Diaoyu islands, which erupted after Ishihara said he wanted to buy them for the metropolitan government.
Ishihara’s gambit appears aimed at forcing a new showdown in the island dispute with China and is based on the view that Japan’s main opposition -- the conservative Liberal Democratic Party - is likely to take power in an election that may take place in the next few months.
