Delegations from the Government of Sudan and a Darfur rebel group have signed a declaration affirming their commitment to the ongoing peace process.
The declaration signed in the Qatari capital Doha calls for the immediate cessation of hostilities between the Sudanese government and the Justice and Equality Movement, and for the resumption of negotiations on the basis of the so-called Doha Document for Peace in Darfur.
A statement issued by the joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur said the two parties also agreed on a time frame to start talks after the Muslim religious holiday of Eid Al-Adha. The parties have been engaged in intensive consultations over recent days in the presence of Qatari and UN-African Union officials.
