Tens of thousands of demonstrators have gathered in London, to protest against UK government austerity measures aimed at slashing the nation’s debt.
Unions, community groups and other activists joined the noisy but peaceful protest against reductions to public sector spending.
The British government says the cuts are needed to push down Britain’s national debt, which stands at more than a trillion pounds. Police say they’ve closed several roads around the British parliament in the Westminster area of London.
Unions and the opposition Labour Party are calling on the government to boost economic growth by relaxing planning laws and increasing lending to businesses. Large-scale marches are also taking place in Belfast and Glasgow.
