The UN-Arab League joint special envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi has reiterated his call for a ceasefire in Syria during Eid al- Adha holiday that begins on October 26th. The visiting envoy warned in a meeting with Jordan’s Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh that the crisis would spread through the region.
Brahimi said if the fighting stops and a truce is implemented, it will be possible to launch a true cease-fire and to start a political process that helps the Syrians resolve problems they face.

Brahimi said, "The invitation [to the cease-fire], if successful, will allow us to build upon it a real truce, holding all fire, and eventually a political process which will help the Syrians solve their problems and allow them to rebuild the Syria they dream of. This conflict, label it as you wish, if it continues, will not be limited to the Syrian borders. It will affect the region and beyond the region."
Brahimi said he will soon pay a visit to Damascus, mediating between both the Syrian government and opposition to work together toward a ceasefire. Jordan’s foreign minister said his country supports the ceasefire proposal, calling it vital in maintaining the territorial integrity of Syria.
On the same day, Russian deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov met with the American ambassador to Russia, Mike McFaul. Russian foreign ministry said in a statement after the meeting that both Russia and the US support a ceasefire.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Wednesday after an Asian summit in Kuwait, that he had made the same proposal during talks this week with Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan. Ahmadinejad said all governments should help to resolve the Syria conflict at the negotiating table, rather than in fighting.
Meanwhile, Iraq’s government has expressed its full backing of Brahimi’s temporary ceasefire proposal in Syria.
