With the job market tight, the civil service remains a top career choice for this year’s new graduates.
A student from Shenzhen university says, "It’s secure. I would prefer a grassroot position, where I can learn the job quickly from direct experience."
This year’s recruitment has the fewest choices available to new graduates, since not all of the posts are available to them.
Some require at least 2 years’ work experience. And candidates for some jobs are now being told they might have to go to disaster zones or work unsociable hours.
A candidate of Guangdong province says, "That may affect some of us, as most people see the jobs as stable and easy. But graduates are still flocking to try their luck. Public servants have a rising social status these days."
The recuitment program continues to encourage new graduates to work at a grassroots level by reserving more vacancies for graduates who have served in rural areas or those who have worked at lower levels of government.
Song Ruliang, professor of Guangdong Provincial Party school, says, "There is a tendency to recruit more people with work experience, so the service’s efficiency will be improved in dealing with daily problems."
Despite the newly-added restrictions, the number of applicants is still expected to reach a record high of 2 million.
