Skydiver Felix Baumgartner has made history by smashing the world record for highest skydive, after leaping from a height of nearly 40 kilometres.
The 43-year old Austrian daredevil ascended to the edge of space in a pressurised capsule suspended beneath a giant helium balloon. He then jumped back to earth, free-falling for four minutes and 19 seconds.
He broke the record for highest manned balloon flight in the process. He also became the first person to break the sound barrier in freefall - reaching a top speed of 1-thousand 137 kilometres per hour.
The previous record for the highest jump was held by Colonel Joe Kittinger, who jumped at an altitude of a little over 31 kilometres in 1960.
