The Red Cross has launched its first ever fundraising campaign to help Spaniards hit by the country’s economic crisis.
The agency has set up collection points in cities across the country as thousands of volunteers seek contributions. The campaign, entitled "Now More Than Ever," aims to raise 30 million euros in donations over two years.
The aid will help 300,000 people in need of food and financial help. Spain is in its second recession in three years, and has an unemployment rate of nearly 25 percent.
The government has introduced a series of austerity measures to tackle mounting debt. But so far, they have had little impact. UNICEF says there are now 2.3 million children living below the poverty line in Spain.
