30 opposition parties in Syria have convened a national conference to rescue the country. It called for “the peaceful overthrow” of President Bashar al-Assad, and discussed resolutions to deal with the current crisis. Representatives from China, Russia and Iran are also attending the meeting in Damascus.
The meeting in Damascus put forward a roadmap to deal with the crisis in Syria. It called for an internal peace transition to end the violence.
Feng Biao, deputy head of the Chinese mission in Syria, stressed at the meeting that the Syrian people should decide the fate of their country. He added that the immediate task in Syria was to stop the fighting.
Feng Biao, Deputy Head of Chinese Mission in Syria, said, "The priority is to end the violence. There is still a chance to end the conflict through political dialogue, although it faces great difficulties."
Some defecting officials and former rebel leaders also attended the meeting. They called for the laying down of arms to reach a peaceful solution. The Peaceful Change Forces and The National Coordination Body for Democratic Change in Syria (NCB) are the two biggest opposition parties in Syria.
The former has called for solving the crisis through an internal peace transition, while the NCB demanded a resolution through an international conference. According to UN estimates, the Syrian conflict has claimed up to 20,000 lives since the revolt began in March 2011.
