Shinzo Abe, the newly elected chief of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party, has called for an ease in tensions over the Diaoyu Islands dispute, saying ties between the two neighbors are "inseverable." He says Japan has benefited from its investment in and exports to China, and Japan’s economic growth needs the Chinese market.
Meanwhile, Japan’s investments in China have also boosted local employment. Recognizing the interdependence of the two nations, Abe says, the two sides need to bring the dispute under control, even though their national interests clash.
