Iran’s Foreign Minister, Ali Akbar Salehi, has arrived in Damascus and met President Bashar Assad and other Syrian officials. Earlier, he was met at the Damascus International Airport by Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Ahmad Arnous.
Salehi told reporters that "strong and firm" relations between Syria and Iran were well known. He said a resolution to the current crisis in Syria could only be made by "the families of the region".
Representatives from Iran, Egypt and Turkey recently met in Cairo to discuss the Syrian crisis, but Salehi said delegates from Saudi Arabia were not able to attend. Salehi also met his Syrian counterpart, Walid al-Moallem in Damascus. Iran has provided strong backing to the Syrian leadership since the violent unrest began in March 2011.
