The former Speaker of Japan’s House of Representatives, Yo-hei Kono, has criticized Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda’s foreign policy as deviating from a "peaceful diplomacy".
According to Kono, the governor of Tokyo, Shintaro Ishihara’s buying of the Diaoyu Islands was just for show. But Noda’s government has worsened the situation by initiating the concept of "nationalizing" the islands.
He pointed out that China and Japan had reached a consensus on "maintaining the status quo" of the Diaoyu Islands since the normalization of relations. But the concept of "nationalizing" the islands has severely trampled the consensus.
The actions from Noda’s government have complicated the issue. Yohei Kono said that Japan’s foreign diplomacy should be based on "rationalism, honesty and history". He says the amendment to the diplomacy and security law that Noda’s government made, harms Japan’s image as a "peaceful nation".
He also points out that Japan has not demonstrated the right position and released enough information to consolidate its "peaceful stances", and this, if continued, will do great harm to Japan’s international image.
