US President Barack Obama has attended a remembrance ceremony for the Septmber 11th victims at the Pentagon Memorial just outside of the capital, Washington D.C.
He first observed a moment of silence together with Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and families of the victims at 8:45am local time, the same time the planes hit New York's Twin towers 11 years ago.
Speaking at the ceremony, Obama expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, saying they are not alone. He also paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the attacks.
Meanwhile, hundreds have gathered in New York, suburban Washington and rural Pennsylvania to mark the 11th anniversary of the attacks. The families of the more than 2750 people killed, when militant Islamist hijackers crashed two jetliners into the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers, appeared on the podium to read their names.
