Yemeni senior military officials have confirmed the killing of Saeed Ali al-Shihri, the second- in-command of the Yemen-based al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.
Al-Shihri was killed along with six other terrorists in an army raid in the southeastern province of Hadra-mout on Monday. The AQAP has not yet issued a statement to confirm al-Shihri’s death.
Elite units of the Yemeni armed forces shelled a compound, where a squad of al-Qaida militants reportedly had gathered for a meeting. Shehri was released from Guantanamo Bay in 2007 and was sent to Saudi Arabia for a rehabilitation programme.
But after completing the programme, he disappeared and later resurfaced as the second-in-command of AQAP. US officials have described AQAP as the most dangerous branch of al-Qaida.
