Somalia’s parliament speaker has announced Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as the country’s new president with 190 votes.
The incumbent president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, who made it into the final round with a lead in the first round, came in second with 79 votes in the run-off. In his address after the announcement, Mohamud thanked members of parliament for voting for him, and the international community for assisting Somalia.
He described the election as historic. The newly elected president will be sworn in later in the day. Gunfire was heard in the capital in celebration of Mohamud’s win. Sharif Sheikh Ahmed accepted the final results of the vote.
