Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has appointed the former Vice President and Interior Minister Humberto de la Calle as chief negotiator for the peace talks with the leftist rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.
A former national police chief and a former military commander are included in the six-man delegation. Santos says he has received a message of support from US President Barack Obama to end a civil war that has lasted decades, killing thousands and leaving whole swathes of the country ungoverned.
It is now expected that the FARC will announce its negotiators before the talks begin next month in the Norwegian capital, Oslo. The FARC is Colombia’s largest rebel group with about 9,000 members, and it is branded as a terrorist organisation by both Colombia and the US.
