Japan has turned on the No. 3 reactor at the Ohi nuclear plant. It’s the first reactor to come back online since last year’s Fukushima crisis.
The reactor has already started power generation and transmission. The Kansai Electric Power Company will gradually raise its power output.
It plans to begin full-capacity power generation by Monday. Just over a week ago, the Japanese government approved the restart of the No. 3 and No. 4 reactors at Ohi. It aims to avert a potential summer power crunch.
The No. 4 unit will resume operations later this month. All of Japan’s 50 nuclear reactors have been off-line for safety checks since early May.
The energy gap is being met by firing up costly fossil fuel units and through conservation steps.
